Description
Published byLocated in Granada, the Sacromonte Abbey is located at the top of Mount Valparaíso, at the end of the seven hills trail. This is where, in the 17th century, various lead plaques (the Lead Books) were found, relating the martyrdom of Saint Caecilius, Saint Ctesiphon and Saint Hesychius.
Under the church are the catacombs, where Saint Caecilius —first bishop and now the patron saint of the city of Granada— was martyred.
What is most notable about this church, beside the Darro, designed by Juan de Maeda and finished in 1567, is the extraordinary Mudejar coffering in the central nave, the transepts and the Main Chapel, and also the Renaissance ceiling of the first of the ten chapels, all designed by Juan Vílchez. The doorway, which is due to Pedro de Orea, is a magnificent example of Andalusian Renaissance from the end of the 16th century.
