The building that stands on the corner of Somogyi and Kelemen streets is unique in its style, appearance, and location. Built in the English Romantic style in 1857, following designs by Károly Gerster, the house, originally a trading house and later a casino, takes its name from the dark gray and black paint formerly used on its exterior. The Black House has provided permanent exhibition spaces for the historical department of the Ferenc Móra Museum and regularly hosts temporary exhibitions related to the city's past. The intersection, where the striking building with its corner tower stands, is unique in Szeged, as all four corner buildings were constructed in the 19th century, survived the devastating flood, and, due to their important role in the cityscape, are all protected monuments.
