Description
Published byLocated in the city of Algeciras, the Town Hall of Algeciras was constructed between 1887 and 1897, according to the plan of the architect, Amadeo Rodríguez. Known to locals as the Old Town Hall, its architectural style is eclectic, as its façade includes decorative elements in different historic styles.
The façade of the Town Hall looks out on to three streets, and is two floors high with large window openings. Particularly striking is the large window on the central street, where the Council holds its meetings, Above the window is the inscription of “Casa Consistorial” (Town Hall), with the coat of arms of Algeciras.
We enter the building through a lobby which opens out into a central patio, around which the municipal offices are laid out. We walk up a large stairway to the first floor, to the Council Meeting Chamber. It is also here that a series of meetings were held on the International Conference in Morocco in 1906.
The Chamber was renovated in 1930, when its walls were coated with Seville-style tiles reproducing well-known places and events in the city: Algeciras from Arcos del Cobre, view of the Río de La Miel, La Chorrera, Plaza Alta, and one of the meetings of the historical Conference on Morocco.
