Description
Published bySancti Petri Castle is found on an island at the mouth of the Caño Sancti Petri, between the municipalities ofSan Fernando and Chiclana de la Frontera (Cádiz).
It is historically linked to one of the most important and famous temples of ancient times: the Temple of Melqart-Hercules. According to historiography records, Hercules is buried here, the mythical founder of Cadiz, where he arrived to carry out one of his twelve labours: the theft of the bulls of King Geryon of Tartessos, whom he killed during the feat. In addition to the remains of Hercules, the Heraklion contained important relics, such as the belt of Teucer or the tree of Pygmalion.
Its fame spread throughout the Mediterranean and numerous classical writers such as Strabo, Philostratus and Posidonius, who narrate the visit of illustrious figures, such as Hamilcar Barca, Hannibal or Julius Caesar; this temple being where Hannibal offered his vows to the god before undertaking the conquest of Italy or where Julius Caesar wept before the statue of Alexander the Great, because, at thirty-two years old, he had not yet achieved glory from Macedonia.
This story and others related to tuna beds, the construction of the castle and the protection of Cádiz or the environmental values of the island are explained during the visits, to promote this tourist, environmental and cultural resource in the Bay of Cádiz.
The castle can be booked for different events, enjoying an incomparable landscape and under the unparalleled light of Cádiz. From corporate events to presentations, weddings, communions, baptisms, birthdays, bachelor/bachelorette parties, engagement parties, performances, astronomy sessions, private activities and many other events can all be held here.
