The Cloisters of Santo Domingo in Jeréz de la Frontera (Cádiz), date back to the 13th century and are one of the jewels of Gothic architecture in Andalusia and a first-rate cultural space in Jeréz. With a classic square structure, it has a central courtyard that distributes the building's facilities.
It was an old Muslim fortification and in 1264, King Alfonso X the Wise gave these facilities to the Dominicans who began the works of their convent that ended in 1595. The convent remained as a united complex until 1835, when the different confiscations of the liberal governments of the reign of Isabel decreed the secularisation and the confiscation of the convent's assets. Although the church remained open for worship, the cloisters were sold.
In 1983, the building was acquired by the City Council, which used it as a cultural facility for years. In 1999, the complex was closed for restoration, reopening in 2012.
The most notable are the Great Cloister, the Oratory of Diego de Ribadeneira, the Almohad Portal on the upper floor, the confessionals, the Puerta de Gracias and the Chapter House, the Refectory, the Lower Dormitory, the Upper Dormitory and the Upper Cloister.
The Cloisters of Santo Domingoare the venue for events and celebrations, as well as various films and series, such as The Crown.
