The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción stands in the Plaza de la Iglesia in Albanchez de Mágina. With a sober Renaissance style, it was built mainly in the 16th century, probably inspired or directed by Francisco del Castillo ‘el Mozo’, although the authorship is not directly documented. It has a Latin cross plan, with three naves (the central one wider and higher), separated by Tuscan columns and covered with a wooden gabled coffered ceiling. The presbytery is flat, topped by a barrel vault decorated with geometric and vegetal plasterwork, where there are cartouches with the Cross of Santiago, a symbol of its link with the Order.
Externally, it has two semicircular arched doorways: the main doorway (north), with a corbel and the Cross of Santiago, and the so-called Puerta del Sol (south). The belfry, located on the north side next to the presbytery, has two bodies of openings for bells and a triangular top , also with decorations of the Cross of Santiago.
Interior heritage. It conserves a baptismal font possibly from the 14th century, with plant decoration; also a capital and column gotic reused from an earlier construction. There is a Baroque crucifix from the Granada school. The current images, including those of San Francisco de Paula (local patron saint), date from after the Civil War.
