The Parish Church of Santa Ana is located in a privileged spot in the centre of Alfarnate, looking down on a little square from the top of a short flight of steps. It is completely free standing, with no adjacent buildings, one of only a handful of churches in this style in the whole of theMálaga province. It was built in the 16th century but acquired the appearance we see today in the 18th century.
The exterior is austere with openings distributed across the entire main facade and side elevations; one corresponds to the aisle on the right, where the baptismal chapel is located. Another opening, rectangular in shape, illuminates the choir, and above them all is an oculus. The church has a basilica floor plan with the door directly facing the altar. It comprises a nave and two aisles accessed by a grand wooden door and a screen from the 18th century carved in walnut and pine wood, with pilasters and floral motifs.
The aisle on the left accommodates the Mudejar three-storey bell tower, with a central pier around which the staircase, supported by interior brick vaults, rises to a belfry with six openings. The high altar is raised and preceded by the chancel. At the front of each aisle is an apsidal chapel flanked on both sides by a pair of niches, smaller than the central one. The one in the right-hand aisle accommodates a statue of Jesus of Nazareth, the one on the left Our Lady of Sorrows. Both statues are paraded through the streets during Holy Week. The nave and aisles are separated by rectangular piers with classical-style semi-circular arches. The nave has a Gothic-Mudejar collar-beam roof, while the aisles are covered by lean-to roofs.
