This museum is a unique cultural space in Andalusia because it holds one of the most important collections of items from Pre-Columbian America in Europe, with samples of crafts from Mexico, Peru, Nicaragua, Colombia and Ecuador.
The two great Pre-Columbian civilisations – Mesoamerica (Mexico) and the Central Andes (Peru) are the two pillars of the collection. Visitors will be able to enjoy all kinds of crafts and household items from these ancient cultures. An interesting collection is the “mujeres bonitas“ (“beautiful women“) collection from Mesoamerica (female relics with intricate details). It is one of the most complete in the world.
The items come from the private collection of Felipe Orlando García-Murciano, a well-known Mexican painter, poet, writer and anthropologist, who donated it to Benalmádena, his second hometown for many decades. He turned his house into this particular museum, and was the head curator from 1970 until he died.
The museum also has a collection of archaeological items found in different places of the town which tell about the history of the municipality, from its first inhabitants, with remains that are over 5,000 years old, until today.
