Created in 1942 as Museo Arqueológico, in 1962 it became Museo Nacional de Arte Hispano-Musulmán, run by the Ministry of Culture. In 1994, the museum acquired its present name and is managed by the Patronato de la Alhambra y el Generalife.
This museum has the largest existing collection of Nasrid art, mainly from excavations and restorations in the Alhambra, which is why this visit is an ideal complement to the monument itself. It also has a unique collection of Islamic not Nasrid art, allowing a more accurate understanding of the evolution of this art, both in the region of al-Andalus and in the Arabic world.
Since 1995, its exhibition halls are installed on the ground floor of the Palacio de Carlos V.
