Thanks to the bold initiative of businessman José Luis Pereda García, the restoration of the Plaza de Toros de La Merced, also known as the Plaza de Las Colonias, has brought a first-class bullring back to Huelva. The work was carried out in record time, with the first clearances starting on 17 November 1983 and the reopening taking place in July the following year, just 8 months later.
The redevelopment included an expansion of 4,500 seats, bringing the seating capacity to around 10,000. The project was entrusted to the architect Luis Marquínez, who conceived the idea of giving life to the square with commercial premises that would create a large leisure area on the site.
