The Magdalena fountain, also known as the Magdalena torrent, supplied the Roman town first and was then used by the Arabs until the Christian conquest. The water that poured from this natural tap was not only used to supply the city's inhabitants. It was also used at the five public baths in the city and to water a number of vegetable gardens.
The Magdalena torrent is situated in the square of the same time, opposite the parish church La Magdalena.
There is a popular legend about this spring. According to the locals, the site on which the Magdalena fountain stands was the den of the famous "Jaén Lizard" that terrorised the city. The most credible version of this legend is that a shepherd set a trap for the reptile that devoured his lambs. The trap consisted of throwing the lizard the skin of one his lambs filled with tinder and the lizard burned to death.
