The architect Ede Magyar was thirty years old in 1907 when he built the Reök Palace, an exemplary work of Hungarian Art Nouveau. Commissioned by the hydraulic engineer Iván Reök, nephew of Mihály Munkácsy, water became the building's central motif. It is represented by the row of blue water lilies adorning the snow-white façade, the balcony railings that evoke the movement of aquatic plants, and the lively variety of wall surfaces that simulate waves. Originally built as a residence, the palace has housed the Regional Arts Center since 2007. Over the past two years, visitors have been able to admire works by Picasso, Goya, Chagall, and Rembrandt, among others, in temporary exhibitions. REÖK is also a popular venue for musical programs, smaller theatrical performances, and other cultural events.
