Description

Published by
Of Muslim origin, the Acequias Moriscas (Moorish Water Channels) pass right through the town of Istán and branch off to irrigate the different areas of vegetable gardens and plots around it.The irrigation channels were used to channel the water both for irrigation and for domestic use. This building is a clear example of the achievements of the Moorish people in channelling water for human use. The Moors made skilful use of all the geographical features, building terraces where it seemed impossible and enabling the water required for irrigation to reach them, by means of the ingenious design of these irrigation channelsWater is the key element in the landscape of Istán and an essential part of it.These irrigation channels are still being used to channel water for irrigating the vegetable gardens in the traditional manner, forming a network which runs through the subsoil under many of the town's streets.Special mention should go to the ““Acequia del Chorro” which runs from the source of the Molinos River, a promenade of outstanding natural beauty.
