Béla Rerich Square

Description

The square is named after the designer of the Dóm Square complex, the first leading figure in Hungarian landscape architecture, who created the gardens of the episcopal palace and university with a modern spirit inspired by tradition. His timeless genius is further demonstrated by the fact that, in a 2007 online poll, the area surrounding the Votive Church was voted the second most famous architectural wonder in Hungary. On either side of the walkway leading to the university lecture halls stand two unique statues. The original Gothic statue depicting St. George slaying the dragon, by the Kolozsvári brothers, is in Prague; the one here is a 20th-century copy of the 1373 work. On the opposite side is a marble statue of young people holding up the dead butterfly of freedom, commemorating the participants in the 1956 revolution.
