Gran Vía is probably Madrid's most famous and bustling thoroughfare. A beautiful avenue 1,300 meters long with over a hundred years of history, it's home to some of the city's most sought-after shops. A veritable open-air shopping center that attracts more than 10 million people every year.
It recently boasts a new look, with more greenery and innovative street furniture, although the most significant changes are in traffic flow. The new Gran Vía is less car-free and less polluted, and more pedestrian-friendly. New pedestrian crossings have been created and the sidewalks widened, so you'll have more space for shopping. In addition, a bike lane, separate from other vehicles and running uphill, has been created in the section between Plaza de España and Plaza de Callao.
Gran Vía begins in the east, at its intersection with Calle Alcalá. From there it winds its way to Plaza de España along three main sections:
From Alcalá to the Red de San Luis
From the Red de San Luis to Callao
From Callao to Plaza de España
