This well-known square in the city center, dedicated to the discoverer of America, is one of Madrid's most prominent open spaces and a strategic location where such important streets as Paseo de Recoletos, Paseo de la Castellana, Génova, Serrano, and Goya converge, as well as iconic buildings like the Columbus Towers.
The monument to Christopher Columbus dominates the square from the center of the fountain around which traffic flows. This white marble sculpture, in the Neo-Gothic style, along with its imposing stone pedestal, measures 17 meters and was built in 1885 by Jerónimo Suñol to commemorate the wedding of Alfonso XII and María de las Mercedes of Orleans.
The square also houses the Discovery Gardens, a park inaugurated in 1970, where various sculptures can be admired, including the monument dedicated to the discovery of America. The Fernán Gómez Cultural Center is located underground.
