The Plaza de Colón is home to this park, inaugurated in 1970, near Madrid's Golden Mile, Serrano Street, as well as the Paseo de la Castellana, the Paseo de Recoletos, Goya Street, the National Library, and the National Archaeological Museum. The gardens, which cover 1.87 hectares, are dedicated to the discovery of America and contain a monument commemorating this historical event, created by Joaquín Vaquero Turcios. The monument rises above a pond and is composed of three large concrete volumes with reliefs related to the discovery. It was erected in 1977, when the remodeling of the Plaza de Colón was completed and the Centro Cultural de la Villa de Madrid, now the Fernán Gómez Cultural Center, was inaugurated.
