Description

Published by
The Puerta de Almería was opened in 2006 with the aim of promoting the archaeological remains pertaining to the ancient and medieval history of the city. In its interior it houses salting ponds from Roman times (1st century to the end of the 4th century), semi excavated in the rock and used for making garum, the Roman fish sauce par excellence, and a section of the wall of Moorish origin (10th century) that surrounded the city.
The Salting pools are the only visible evidence of the Roman presence in Almería, they were discovered as a result of an archaeological dig between 1984 and 1985.
