Church of Saint Michael the Archangel
TempleHistoric buildingSan Miguel, Spain
Description
Published byThe heart of the historic center of San Miguel is its parish church dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. This church is the epicenter around which the town's historic center grew.
It was built from the site of an early hermitage, of which there is written record dating back to 1665. Its conversion into a parish church occurred in 1796, responding to the needs of the residents of San Miguel who, until then, whenever they needed to bury a family member or receive the sacraments, had to travel to the parish church of San Pedro in the municipality of Vilaflor, along long and winding roads. Thus, during the first half of the 19th century, the current church took shape, with the main nave, the two sacristies, and the tower. However, it was not inaugurated until 1874. In 1953, a new tower was added and the traditional façade was renovated.
