Description
Published bySan Juan de Aznalfarache Wall, also known as Hisn Al-Faray Wall, is a prominent historical vestige located in San Juan de Aznalfarache. Built between 1196 and 1197 by order of the Almohad Caliph Yaqub Al-Mansur, these fortifications were erected on a strategic hill called Hisn Al-Faray, which means ""Miradero Castle"" due to its privileged views over Seville. The walls were built as part of a fortified enclosure that included a main watchtower, intended for the defence and control of the region during Almohad reign. Later, the fortress became the residence of the poet and king of the Taifa of Seville, Al-Mutamid.
In 1248, during the Reconquista, King Ferdinand III commissioned the Master of the Order of Santiago, Pelayo Pérez Correa, to capture this fortress, using it as headquarters in the campaign to conquer Seville. Following the victory, the fortress was handed over to the Order of Malta (Order of Saint John of Jerusalem) on 25 February 1248, consolidating its influence in the region. Today, the walls surround most of the District of Monumento de San Juan de Aznalfarache, where the Monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is located, built in 1948 on top of the ancient fortifications
