The former Palace of Communications is a monumental building that has housed Madrid City Hall since 2007. Designed and built by Antonio Palacios and Joaquín Otamendi as the headquarters of the Spanish Postal and Telegraph Society, it was inaugurated in 1909. In 1993, it was declared a Site of Cultural Interest with the category of Monument.
Following principles of rationality and functionality, the building represents the union of tradition and modernity. Constructed of stone, iron, and glass, the Cibeles Palace stands on land that once housed the former pleasure gardens of El Retiro Park.
The building is divided into different spaces:
The former Postal and Telegraph Operations Courtyard, on the second floor, houses a tourist information point and the Café Cibeles café-restaurant, as well as cultural activities. Since December 2022, the Operations Courtyard has housed the Landscape of Light Interpretation Center, an educational space where visitors can discover the treasures of this area, comprised of the Paseo del Prado, the Jerónimos neighborhood, and the Retiro Park, declared a World Heritage Site on July 25, 2021. The Old Chapel, an open-plan room of 70 m² located next to the second-floor lounge and adjacent to the cafeteria, is ideal for small presentations or internal company events. CentroCentro, with its more than 8,000 m² distributed across floors 1, 3, 4, and 5, offers a wide range of cultural activities focused on contemporary art. The Crystal Gallery, a 2,800 m² multifunctional space serving the city, enclosed by the impressive structure of a glass vault.
The Caja de Música Auditorium, with a capacity of 262 people and fully accessible, is located beneath the Crystal Gallery. Built later, it hosts presentations, concerts, and conferences.
Two multipurpose rooms, Jorge García Berlanga and Sigfrido Martín Begué, located on the first floor, and an open-plan room, Gloria Fuertes, on the second, for small-scale activities or internal company events.
The Cornamusa Cibeles restaurant and the Cibeles Rooftop Terrace, located on the sixth floor.
Mirador Madrid, located in the palace tower, from which you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the city.
