Description
Published byThis square was built in the mid-19th century, on the site of the old vegetable garden of San Francisco convent. It was converted into a public area after the sale of church lands conducted by Mendizábal. The centre of the square was originally occupied by a monument to Espoz y Mina, a hero of the War of Independence whose name the square still bears. Later on, a bandstand was installed, which, in turn, was removed when the square was last remodelled in 1991. This latest rehabilitation respected the 19th century aesthetics that characterise the square, which has always been a favourite spot with Cadiz residents of all ages.
