The Central Market of Cadiz, also known as the Mercado de Abastos, is one of the city's most iconic landmarks and a true showcase of Cadiz culture. Situated in the heart of the old town, this market combines history, tradition, and modernity, offering a unique experience for locals and visitors alike.
Opened in 1838, the Central Market of Cadiz is one of the oldest markets in Spain and stands on the site of an old public square known as Plaza de la Libertad. Its original design by architect Torcuato Benjumeda stands out for its neoclassical style, with columns and galleries surrounding the central space.
The market was renovated and modernised in 2009, preserving its historic essence while adding new facilities and spaces to enhance the visitor experience.
