Description

Located in Cádiz, the Roman Theatre was built by order of Lucio Cornelio Balbo “the Minor" in the 1st century B.C. It is the second oldest Roman theatre in the Empire built of stone, after Pompeii in Rome, and the second-largest in Hispania, after Cordoba, 120 metres in diameter, occupying most of the district now known as the Barrio de El l Pópulo.
The Roman Theatre in Cádiz was discovered 1980 and since then there has been ongoing work for its preservation, consolidation and restoration.
In 2015 a Visitor Centre for the theatre was opened showing remains of the same by means of archaeological wells, where you can discover more details of the Gades theatre's history and observe the cavea or enclosure through large windows. Work is currently being undertaken to prepare the access to the theatre gallery, which will be opened to visitors during the coming year.
