Description
Published byLa Malagueta Bullring was built in 1874 by the Malaga-born architect Joaquín Rucoba, who was inspired by Neo-Mudejar architecture for its design. Rucoba was one of the main representatives of architectural eclecticism in Spain. The construction of the La Malagueta Bullring was carried out thanks to the initiative of a group of bullfighting entrepreneurs and fans from Malaga, who organized themselves into a society called "La Malagueta." The society's goal was to build a modern and functional bullring that could accommodate a large number of spectators.
The bullring was inaugurated on June 11, 1876, with a bullfight featuring bullfighters El Tato, Frascuelo, and Lagartijo. Since then, the bullring has been the scene of numerous bullfights and bullfighting events, becoming one of the most important bullfighting venues in Spain. In 1981, the Plaza de Toros de La Malagueta was declared a Site of Cultural Interest by the Andalusian Regional Government, recognizing its historical and architectural value. Today, the bullring remains an iconic landmark of Málaga and one of the city's main tourist attractions. It is owned by the Málaga Provincial Council. The architecture of La Malagueta is characterized by its Neo-Mudejar style, which is inspired by traditional Andalusian and Moorish architecture.
La Malagueta bullring is the venue for Málaga's bullfighting festival, held in August during the city's August Fair, in addition to other cultural and sporting events. In April, it hosts the traditional Picasso bullfight, which combines art and spectacle and is held in homage to the brilliant Málaga painter Pablo Ruiz Picasso.
The center for immersive bullfighting experiences (CEIT) offers audio-guided tours or guided tours of the bullring and the six permanent exhibition halls, which feature large-scale audiovisual displays, works of art from various eras, and displays of bullfighting costumes and accessories. The visit includes:
* Visit to the Malagueta Bullring and its most hidden spots: the ring, the bullpens, the chapel, the infirmery, etc.
* Visit to the permanent exhibition rooms,
* Several immersive and 360º experiences such as a virtual bullfighting simulator,
* An audio guide available in 6 languages (Spanish, English, German, French, Italian and Russian).
