Description
Published byAbout seven kilometres south of the city of Cordoba, we come across a bridge over the River Guadajoz, know as "Puente Viejo", that is, Old Bridge.
Built during the Roman Republic, it was part of the road from Cordoba to Seville through Écija, also known as Via Augusta. It has been renovated many times and one of the renovations included beautiful cutwaters in the 18th century. Despite all this, it retains its old structure. It is 72 metres long and made up of seven vaults of different sizes (span and rise). The original tympanum was made of ashlar masonry and had a solid appearance.
An interesting fact is that during the trip that Saint Teresa of Jesus made to Seville to found a Carmelite convent, she had to take a nap under its vaults due to the heat in Andalusia in May.
