Popularly known as the Little Chapel of Europe ("Capillita de Europa"), the original shrine dates from 1690, when the bishop of Cádiz allowed its construction in the Cortijo del Gálvez, in Algeciras. It was damaged by an earthquake in 1755, and was rebuilt in 1769, although its façade was left incomplete.
In 1936, the bishopric sold it to an individual, who turned it into a carpentry workshop. The Local Council acquired it in 1947, and it was renovated in the 1980s, including the upper part of the façade.
The images of Christ Tied to a Column and the Virgin of the Sorrows, who are the Venerated Figures of the Easter Monday Procession in Algeciras, are on display in the heart of the city, between Plaza Alta square, Calle Radio Algeciras and Murillo.
The bell of its belfry is the one that existed in the old protestant church of the Cristina Hotel, which was donated by this establishment in 1961.
