Juan Diego Flórez (Lima, 1973) began his musical career at a very young age, singing and playing Peruvian music, pop, and rock. At 17, he began his studies at the National Conservatory of Music in Lima, and three years later he received a scholarship to study voice at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In 1996, he made his professional debut at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, when he stepped in to replace the lead tenor role of Corradino in Matilde di Shabran. His debut was a resounding success and marked the beginning of a stellar career. That same year, at just 23 years old, he made his debut at La Scala in Milan, conducted by Riccardo Muti, at the opening of the 1996/97 season. Since then, he has performed regularly in the world's most important theaters and concert halls alongside internationally renowned conductors. At the beginning of his career, Juan Diego Flórez gained particular renown for his interpretations of the bel canto repertoire, especially in the operas of Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini. In recent years, his interpretations of French Romantic heroes have also earned him great acclaim from audiences and critics alike. His most recent debuts include Romeo (Roméo et Juliette) at the Vienna State Opera, Gennaro (Lucrezia Borgia) at the Salzburg Festival and the Bavarian State Opera, Hoffmann (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Ricciardo (Ricciardo e Zoraide) at the Rossini Opera Festival, Alfredo (La traviata) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Des Grieux (Manon) at the Vienna State Opera, Werther (Werther) at the Royal Opera House, Rodolfo (La bohème) at the Zurich Opera House and the Royal Opera House, and Faust (Faust) at the Vienna State Opera. His upcoming engagements include Lucia di Lammermoor at La Scala and Rigoletto at the Arena di Verona, among others, as well as concerts and recitals worldwide.
