Description
Published byThe Castle of Mata Bejid, also known as Castillejo, is situated to the north of the Mata Bejid district in the municipality of Cambil, Jaén. This fortress of Muslim origin, built in the 14th century, has a rectangular floor plan with two towers at either end. The northern tower contains a room with a pointed vault, while the southern tower has a solid lower part and a habitable upper part. Although the castle is now in ruins, several historical elements have been preserved, including a rectangular cistern and a well-preserved stone threshing floor. It once played a strategic role in the defence of the region during the Reconquista.
