Turón Castle is a medieval fortress in ruins located near the town of Ardales. Strategically located on a hill about 580 metres above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the Turón River valley and the picturesque natural environment that surrounds it. The castle was built by the Nasrids in the 14th century as part of a defensive line of the Kingdom of Granada, designed to protect the region from Castilian advances. It was part of a network of fortresses along with the castles of La Peña, El Burgo and Bobastro. During the Border Wars, Turón Castle was the setting for several battles, including the one that resulted in the death of the Scottish knight Sir James Douglas. In 1433, Castilian forces led by Gómez de Ribera captured the fortress, marking a milestone in the Reconquista of that region.
Although currently in ruins, large portions of the castle walls and towers remain. The original enclosure had a fortress, more than ten towers and a barbican wall, reflecting the strategic and defensive importance of the fortress in its time.
