Description
Published byPunta Umbría, Huelva, has a 4,886 m2 fish market owned by the Public Ports Agency of Andalusia and managed by the Santo Cristo del Mar Fishermen's Guild of Punta Umbría.
The Punta Umbría fish market is one of the most important in Andalusia. High-quality seafood is auctioned there, like anchovies, sardines, clams, cuttlefish, octopus and much more. Facing the estuary, you'll find the landing area for catches, the electronic auction room, the sample auction floor, the dedicated space for clam trading, and the veterinarian's office, along with other auxiliary facilities. On the other side, facing the market, are the shared and individual processing rooms, along with the facility entrance and offices.
Our fleet has 300 meters of quay and 1,512 square metres of fish market, complemented by net rooms and an ice factory. Visiting the fish market is an immersive experience of the essence of the sea, activating your senses: the smell of fresh fish, the feel of the nets, and the sight of the diverse boats.
On the upper level, there is an interpretation centre and a marine museum, where visitors can learn about the various fishing methods and their respective catches. In this small local museum, you can find details about the various fishing techniques employed by the local fleet. The pieces on display are small miniatures made by the net makers who sew the nets at the fishing port.
The murals that adorn this place showcase the marine life found on the ocean floors where the local boats fish. There’s also a section where you can learn about all the fishing boats in the Punta Umbría fleet, with photographs of the vessels you can see in the town's harbour and estuary.
As you walk around, you can also see the live activity taking place at the fish market. From a glass-enclosed area designed for tourist visits, you can watch the unloading of the catch, the weighing of fish and shellfish, the sale of products and other daily activities.
