Description
Published byThe Peñaflor Mines, located in the Campiña de Sevillaregion, are an important natural site that offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the local geology and biodiversity. This area was historically exploited for its rich mineral deposits such as iron and copper, but today it is an ecotourism destination. The area is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, with rock formations and typical Mediterranean vegetation. Visitors can follow hiking trails and observe the local wildlife, integrating mining history with the surrounding nature.
During the 19th century mining experienced a significant boom, with the opening of mines such as 'La Preciosa' and 'San José', which produced high-quality minerals, including copper with a purity level of 30%. In addition to copper, iron minerals such as high-quality oligist and large deposits of phosphates were mined. Pyrite, an abundant mineral in the area, was traditionally used as a source of sulphur for the manufacture of gunpowder and sulphuric acid. The mining activities were halted in 1918.
These mines have left an indelible mark on the history and economy of Peñaflor, bearing witness to its rich mining tradition.
