Description
Published byPlaza del Altozano is one of the most iconic and popular squares in the Triana neighbourhood. It is located after the bridge, between the main streets of Betis, Pureza, San Jorge and San Jacinto. It is a beautiful place, adorned by two monuments: Juan Belmonte and Flamenco, as well as the amazing architecture of the Chapel of Nuestra Señora del Carmen.
The monument to Juan Belmonte stands out in Seville because of its originality and composition, breaking away from the Sevillian realist tradition started by Antonio Susillo in the 19th century.
The sculpture was made in 1972 as a tribute to Sevillian bullfighter Juan Belmonte, nicknamed “El Pasmo de Triana”, as he lived in that neighbourhood since he was a child, although he was actually born on Calle Feria, in the Macarena neighbourhood. The statue is facing the river and the Real Maestranza bullring.
