Description
Published byLocated in the old quarter of Seville, next to the Cathedral, the Giralda tower and the Reales Alcázares, the Archbishop's Palace is one of Seville's great secrets. With a wonderful Baroque exterior, it is seldom visited and only parts of it are open. The building can be considered from three perspectives: as a building or for its artistic or cultural heritage, as it houses a very important ecclesiastical archive. It is known as the city's third art gallery - after Museo de Bellas Artes and the Cathedral - with good reason: it has works by Murillo, Zurbaran, Juan de Espinal and Lucas Valdés.
It is built around two main courtyards, with a number of smaller gardened courtyards to the rear. Its Baroque features include the main staircase, the façades and the two doorways, the most important of which is truly majestic.
Some of the highlights of the Archbishop's Palace include the mounting block courtyard, the chapel and the second, northern, courtyard, the Santo Tomás Hall, the Main Hall, the Throne Room, the Prelate's gallery, the chapel antechamber and the Oratory.
The palace was also the military HQ of the French occupation in the 19th century and the occasional home of the Dukes of Montpensier on their arrival in the city.
