Description
Published byAt the end of the 14th century, Diego López de Stúñiga acquired this site and decided to build this Mudéjar style palace and subsequently made a series of improvements, finishing with the centreline in the façade in the first third of the 17th century.
The palace has two main architectural volumes which are the Royal Palace and the Tile Palace.
Highlights include rooms like the Qubba or Royal Quarters, which houses a unique collection of medieval carpentry, and the Duke's Chamber with its polychrome plasterwork, murals and remains of really interesting friezes.
In the urban area you'll find the Altamira Palace, which was originally known as the Gateway to the Jewish Quarter and since 1576 as the La Carne Gateway.
After the conquest of Seville by Castile in 1248 the new Jewish quarter was located in the current neighbourhoods of Santa Cruz and San Bartolomé. This was inhabited by a social group of rich Jews, some of whom were "almojarifes" or senior royal and municipal functionaries.
