The Mudéjar architecture of Aragon, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1986, is a unique style that fuses Islamic and Christian traditions.
Zaragoza is home to three architectural treasures that tell the story of coexistence and cultural fusion in the region.
The Cathedral of the Savior, affectionately known as La Seo, is a place with a long history dating back to Roman times, when the Forum of Caesaraugusta stood on this very site. Later, it was also the location of the Great Mosque of Zaragoza, whose minaret still partially survives in the current tower.
One of the cathedral's most emblematic and fascinating features is the wall of the Parish Church of San Miguel, located on the exterior of the chapel of the same name.
Built in the 14th century, it is adorned with complex and delicate brick and ceramic ornamentation, creating an intricate interplay of geometric shapes and plant motifs. This wall is not only a work of art, but also a symbol of the cultural dialogue between the Christian and Islamic communities of the time. The combination of decorative elements from both traditions creates a visual harmony that speaks of a peaceful and fruitful coexistence. https://catedraldezaragoza.es The Aljafería Palace, with its blend of Islamic and Christian architecture, is a symbol of the power and sophistication of the Taifa of Zaragoza in the 11th century. The Mudéjar palace, built within the walls of the Aljafería, is a masterpiece that reflects the skill of the Mudéjar artisans and their ability to create beauty through the fusion of styles. The Throne Room, where royal audiences were held, is adorned with a magnificent coffered ceiling that combines gilded and polychrome wood, creating a visually rich effect. The ornamental details of this room, as well as the frescoes and plasterwork, show both Islamic and Christian influences and reflect the cultural coexistence that characterized this era. https://www.cortesaragon.es
The Church of San Pablo, known as "The Third Cathedral of Zaragoza," is a living testament to Mudéjar splendor.
Built in the 13th century and expanded from the 14th to the 18th centuries, it showcases the artistic styles of these periods (from Gothic to Baroque), and also includes later additions. Its slender octagonal tower, decorated with intricate geometric brick and glazed ceramic motifs, is a delight to behold. It is a very significant monument of Mudéjar architecture in Aragon, and for this reason, in 2001 UNESCO declared the complex formed by the Tower and Church of San Pablo a World Heritage Site. https://sanpablozaragoza.org
