The Monastery of the Resurrection, or more commonly known as the Monastery of the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre, comprises the Church of San Nicolás de Bari, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the convent buildings.
It is the only Mudéjar-style convent structure that has survived intact and in operation to this day.
Inhabited for 700 years, it remains a living building and the only one of its kind in Spain.
This gem is located in the historic center of the city, next to the ruins of the Roman Walls of Caesaraugusta.
The current church was built in the 17th century on the site of a small Romanesque church, of which only the Christogram remains. The Monastery of the Resurrection was founded in Zaragoza in the early 14th century by the Canonesses Regular of the Holy Sepulchre. During the second Siege of Zaragoza in 1809, the monastery was nearly blown up by the French, but after a heroic resistance in which more than half the population of Zaragoza died, the city surrendered, thus avoiding destruction. This monastery is the only one within the city that has survived the passage of time, and the order that founded it seven centuries ago still lives within its walls.
