After the discovery of America, Hacienda Guzmán (La Rinconada, Seville) with its three beam mills, became one of the most important olive oil factories in the world, run by Hernando Colón, son of the famous explorer and navigator who explored a new commercial route by sending the olive oil produced in the estate as part of the Share of Profits given to the New World and loaded onto the West Indies Fleet.
Today, more than 500 years later, and after undergoing major restoration work, Hacienda Guzmán, the most important oil production estate of the Baroque Seville, is living a period of splendour, combining private and family use with the production of olive oil and the development of oil tourism activities managed by the Juan Ramón Guillén Foundation, non-profit organisation based in the estate.
Just 15 minutes away from Seville train station, and ten from the airport, Hacienda Guzmán stands proud, surrounded by 340 hectares of organic olive groves of the varieties manzanilla, hojiblanca and arbequina. Those who visit the estate can travel in time and check the method used between the 16th and 19th centuries in the impressive original mill of the 17th century, which has a 15-metre long mahogany press , contrasting with the careful olive making process , from hand selection at the fields to the milling phase in the oil mill, where one of the five best premium olive oils in the world is produced, HG. Visitors can also stroll around the olive library, a unique set of olive trees in the world with over 150 varieties from 13 different countries, as different as Greece, Albania, Syria or Mexico. A singular enclave that gathers the diversity of varities from around the world. The tour is completed by passing through each of the three courtyards, the museum of carriages and the Andalusian garden, which surrounds the main façade, painted by the romantic writer Richard Ford during his stay at the estate. At the end of the day, visitors can taste the four HG olive oils produced at the estate, in which they will learn to differentiate the nuances between different varieties.
The oil tourism offer of Hacienda Guzmán is huge and offers a variety of experiences, from a guided tour with oil tasting and a visit with a miller's breakfast, to he most comprehensive option, which includes a visit to the harvest, a horse-drawn carriage ride, and a picnic of gourmet Andalusian products in the shade of the olive trees.
It offers individual and private tours, but also offers the possibility of organising corporate events, team-building activities, etc., always customising events based on the customer's needs.
The resources obtained from the olive oil tourism activity are entirely allocated to the different programs of the Juan Ramón Guillén Foundation, an entity aimed at promoting the development of the Andalusian olive sector and the enhancement of the olive oil culture.
