The Rose Garden of Madrid enjoys a privileged location within the Parque del Oeste, one of the city's most important green spaces. It is open every day of the year, admission is free for everyone, and reservations are not required. It is very close to the Príncipe Pío train station, Plaza de España, the Temple of Debod, and the cable car. The garden was designed in 1955 by Ramón Ortiz, head gardener for the Madrid City Council. It covers an area of 32,000 m², where approximately 20,000 rose bushes of more than 650 different varieties of modern roses grow annually (400 of which are low-growing, and the rest are climbing, weeping, standard, etc.). Several ponds complete the decoration of one of Madrid's emblematic gardens. In 2006, it was awarded the "Award of Garden Excellence" by the World Federation of Rose Societies, recognizing it as one of the most exceptional rose gardens in the world.
