Description

There are places, like Taxco, that owe their history and appearance to the bounty of their soil, and this town found its destiny in silver. Its people still make a living from the trade and manufacture of objects that the precious metal allows; the Baroque buildings erected during the mining boom of the Colonial era are still preserved. Any terrace is a good place to contemplate these jewels of yesteryear; the newer, smaller ones must be sought out among the cobblestone streets that wind up and down everywhere.
The Reason
Its Rich Silver Past
Thanks to silver, the magnate José de la Borda commissioned the construction of the beautiful Parish of Santa Prisca and San Sebastián in the 17th century.
The Borda House, now the House of Culture, is another magnificent example of the Baroque architecture that was built during times of abundance.
Religious objects were made with silver before, but not jewelry. It wasn't until 1931, when New Yorker William Spratling established his first workshop on Las Delicias Street, that the jewelry tradition that gives the town its identity began.
The Essentials
Contemplate the nine altarpieces in the Santa Prisca Parish Church, as well as the canvases inside attributed to the painter Miguel Cabrera.
Must-Sees
Enter the legendary Bar Berta, founded in 1930, to enjoy the drinks they prepare there.
See the mural by Juan O'Gorman that adorns the pool at the Hotel Posada de la Misión.
Wander aimlessly through the cobblestone alleyways around Plaza Borda.
