The area occupied by the site of the former San Agustín convent, and the surrounding area in general, sequentially preserves vestiges and remains of all the cultures, periods, and even historical vicissitudes that have taken place in Zaragoza.
The historical heritage of the San Agustín complex, on which the Zaragoza History Center is located, is extremely rich, varied, and significant for the city.
In the various archaeological campaigns carried out on this site or adjacent areas, evidence has been found of the presence of Iberian, Roman (with a domestic settlement outside the city walls), and Muslim (with a necropolis) cultures, as well as Christian convent settlements, first the ephemeral Franciscan monastery (1219-1286 or 1313) and the permanent settlement of the Augustinians, until its subsequent confiscation and conversion into a barracks. Military Intendancy, mid-19th century.
Currently, the History Center aims to reflect the present day as well as review the historical and social evolution of any era, incorporating topics of interest to today's citizens and addressing their expectations and motivations.
The exhibitions are conceived as new heritage, a new information channel, and a vehicle for visual messages, fostering active participation with complementary activities and taking the exhibition's message beyond its initial conception, thus multiplying communication codes and new technologies applied to exhibition practice.
In addition to three exhibition spaces (first floor, Crypt Space, and Transit Space), the center has three classrooms/workshops, an auditorium with a capacity of 183 people, a cultural information space with free internet access, a cafeteria/restaurant, and an Audiovisual Laboratory with various recording studios for instrumental groups, a video studio, spaces for audiovisual production, and teaching activities. and whose objective is to provide young creators with the appropriate working environment for the development of their projects.
