This museum space, located in the house where Madrid's patron saint lived, offers a journey through the history of the city of Madrid from Prehistory to the establishment of the Court, through different rooms such as the San Isidro Room, the Renaissance Courtyard, the Archaeobotanical Garden, and the Visitor Warehouse.
The museum's permanent exhibition, spanning more than 600 square meters, explores the archaeological and paleontological heritage of the city of Madrid, showcasing its more than 500,000 years of history through objects from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, and Metal Age cultures of Madrid, the Roman remains found in the Manzanares and Jarama valleys, the Islamic foundation of the city, and the development of the town after its conquest in 1085 until the 16th century.
After its renovation, the museum divides its exhibition into three sections: Before Madrid, where prehistoric, Roman, and Visigothic remains are exhibited; Mayrit/Madrid, focused on the city's founding by the Muslims, its incorporation into the Castilian kingdom, and the arrival of the court with Philip II; and San Isidro, dedicated to the Madrid-born saint and the traditions of his time. The museum also features other noteworthy spaces: a 16th-century Renaissance courtyard, a storage area open to the public displaying a large number of archaeological and paleontological remains from sites in Madrid, and a garden featuring plants documented in medieval Madrid.
