Located in the former Delicias station—a magnificent example of 19th-century iron architecture—the museum opened in 1984. A visit offers a comprehensive collection of historical railway equipment, from rolling stock (locomotives to passenger carriages) to all kinds of artifacts, elements, photographs, and recreations that illustrate the various professions related to the railway throughout its history. The building that houses the museum is the other main attraction of the visit. Madrid-Delicias station was inaugurated on March 30, 1880, to serve the railway line to Ciudad Real, which would continue to the border with Portugal. It is, therefore, the oldest station built as a permanent and monumental structure in Madrid. This project, designed by the French engineer Émile Cachelièvre, reflects the latest European innovations in the use of iron and glass for construction, and stands as a prime example of modernity and progress for Madrid in the last third of the 19th century. The central nave is 170 meters long, 35 meters wide, and reaches a height of 22.5 meters thanks to a framework of 17 cast-iron porticos supported by pillars, creating a completely open space without the need for intermediate supports or any other type of additional bracing. Various themed rooms allow visitors to explore the history of Spanish railways. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and offers a variety of activities for children and families, such as educational workshops, theatrical performances, and rides on miniature trains. In addition, the cafeteria is located in a beautiful 1930s dining car (service temporarily suspended).
The Railway Museum houses the Railway Historical Archive and the Railway Library and Newspaper Archive, a unique collection in Spain whose main objective is the conservation, study, and dissemination of railway heritage.
