The former palace of the Marquis of Matallana, built in 1776, houses an interesting collection of paintings, furniture and decorative arts from the 19th century, which recreates the daily life and customs of the upper bourgeoisie during the Romantic period. During their visit, the public can learn about society during this historical period, as well as who the main protagonists of this cultural movement were in Spain. Works by Goya, Esquivel, Madrazo, Alenza, and the Bécquer brothers, Sargadelos and Sèvres ceramics, jewelry made of ebonite, lava, or natural hair, a collection of porcelain dolls, 15 pianos, Empire and Elizabethan style furniture, and the pistol with which Larra committed suicide, all serve to recreate the atmosphere of Romanticism, a cultural movement that, during the first half of the 19th century, stirred the hearts of young artists, intellectuals, and politicians. One of the most special corners of this unique museum is the Magnolia Garden, which follows the structure of the 18th-century French model, organized into four paths separated by flowerbeds of varying sizes and with a circular fountain at their intersection. Each of the flowerbeds features a different tree, including the magnolia that gives the garden its name. The Museum Garden Café is located there, where you can enjoy coffee and a wide variety of homemade cakes.
