Description

Published by
Located on the popular Alcalá Street, from which it takes its name, this cultural space pays special attention to contemporary creation in the visual and plastic arts, both international and national, through a program of solo and group exhibitions focused on mid-career artists and retrospectives of established artists. The works are presented in a variety of media and formats, including new technologies as a form of artistic expression. The Alcalá 31 exhibition hall is housed in an emblematic building designed by Antonio Palacios, constructed between 1935 and 1943. Originally the headquarters of the Banco Mercantil e Industrial, it is currently managed by the Community of Madrid. In 2002, it was renovated by architects José Luis Íñiguez de Onzoño and Ignacio de las Casas to house the offices of what was then called the Ministry of the Arts and the exhibition hall.

The exhibition hall, covered by an immense glass block vault, occupies the large central nave that was once the bank's trading floor.
